Plastic ring keeps breaking - tell engineering department!

Submitted by Brian - 10/2/2017

Please tell your engineering team that the plastic ring keeps breaking. They can easily design a metal ring that will not break! Seriously it is a win win for you and your customers. And send out a metal ring to every customer that had this break on them. Your engineering team did not create a robust product. You owe it to your customers to fix this!

Second one that broke in a month

Submitted by Chef KS - 9/15/2017

I have use the stand mixer daily in my restaurant, we grind quite a bit of meat. I had my original food grinder for 5+ years so when it broke I wasn't that upset about it. However I bought this one 30days ago and used it just like my original. This just happened. I called customer service to complain and was told "sorry sir there is nothing I can do for you" You guys have lost a loyal customer.

Submitted by Linda - 7/31/2017

I was in the middle of grinding soft, mushy blackberries (not some tough meat mind you) when suddenly......POW! the grinder split apart. This was only my 2nd time using this. You'd think as powerful and heavy-duty as their Stand Mixer is Kitchen Aid would have an accessory that could handle that power.

Poor Quality

Submitted by Chef - 7/7/2017

I did not read the reviews online about the grinders problems with cracking. I would think that the company would replace the grinder, as it is a manufacturing flaw. As reported here and online, the plastic on the grinder cracks. Then when you go to get it replaced, there is only a one year warranty. Doesn't make sense. Why would anyone want to spend the money on Kitchen Aid that you expect quality. The mixer is great, but the have skimped on the grinder.

Fantastic! But needs a splatter shield.

Submitted by Rosie the Riveter - 7/6/2017

I love it. It's great for finely grinding and food. I particularly love using it to grind meat and vegetables for spaghetti sauce and burgers. The only problem it has is when grinding the meat, it has a tendency to splatter juices everywhere. If they just had some sort of splatter shield for it, I would be rating this at 5 stars.

Food Grinder problems

Submitted by Fran - 7/1/2017

I received my food grinder as a gift from my son to go along with my Kitchen Aid mixer. I used it a few times to grind chicken but decided it was too much work. This spring I bought the vegetable and fruit strainer to use on home grown tomatoes. When I took the food grinder attachment out of the box I noticed it had a crack but used it anyway. Did the tomatoes fine but when I tried to put some small grapes through the strainer it exploded grapes all over me and the kitchen. I wouldn't buy another plastic one but will try the metal one since I need a good strainer for my fruits and veggies. Hope it performs better and longer.

Cracked housing

Submitted by Rex - 6/15/2017

Worst product ever

Submitted by teddyM - 6/13/2017

I have three Kitchen Aid mixers that I have purchased over the years and so far all three work great. Unfortunately I thought that I would buy another grinder so that I could keep one with each machine, but stupidly . I thought that I would buy the plastic unit because it was a little cheaper , and what could possibly go wrong ??? Well , I got about 6 months use from it and when needing to use it again , I heard a LOUD CRACK when I started to grind my fresh meat for my weekly meatloaf . I had no idea what it was , but as I tried to continue grinding , it would NOT work properly. I switched out the grinder with one of the metal ones to finish the job , and when cleaning the plastic unit , I found two cracks in the neck part that sits up against the machine ( as shown in one of the reviews on this page).but the cracks were not surface cracks ,but through and through ,which rendered it useless. NO MORE PLASTIC EVER AGAIN !!! HUGH waste of money !

MINE TOO CRACKED!

Submitted by Eltee - 5/15/2017

I was grinding some meat today and heard a loud "crack" coming from the grinder. Sure enough, there were 2 cracks in the housing; one at 11 o'clock and one at 3 o'clock, loofing at the power hub attachment end. I put a hose clamp on it to finish my project but it won't last forever. I'm writing this because I saw so many other complaints of this nature in the reviews. Is it a design flaw?

Crack in Base of housing

Submitted by Missa - 5/9/2017

I have used the meat grinder attachment for several years when making homemade tamales. When I took it out of the box this year I discovered a crack at the base where it inserts into the stand mixer. Even though I have had it a number of years, I only use it once a year. I was extremely saddened to find the crack as the attachment was not inexpensive to purchase.

Problems with Food Grinder maybe assembly problem by user

Submitted by Teresa - 4/5/2017

I love this food grinder and use it for all types of meat on a weekly basis. Today I accidentally did not assemble it correctly before trying to use it and learned that is a disaster and created most of the problems reported in the negative reviews here. Someone put away the parts to my food grinder and didn't put the little square "knife" part with the other parts and I somehow forgot it existed. So I assembled the grinder parts and it hardly worked at all. I go a small crack in the housing, had to use the pusher to even get anything out a all and thought I had broken something. I cleaned it all out and tried again and started even getting metal shavings grinding from the shaft into the meat. So I stopped, took it apart again and found a manual and realized I had neglected to put the little square part they call the "knife" on to the shaft before the round grinding plate. Once I found it and put it on, viola, no problems at all and it was back to working as it has always worked....which is GREAT......so I wonder if that is a part that people don't realize is essential to the operation of the grinder....it can't be lost or just ignored. In any case, there is the issue that these parts can be easily lost but I clean and dry mind and then store them all assembled in a large plastic zip lock bag near my mixer so it is ready to use next time.

Good innovation, impractical design.

Submitted by Father of 5 - 3/16/2017

I used this grinder for the first time tonight, and was mostly satisfied with the actual performance of the setup. Unfortunately, having used a commercial grade grinder before, I found the housing design to be frustratingly inefficient. If the food were droped into a v shaped chanel feeding down directly to the auger, it would eliminate the need to physically ramrod every individual piece of food down the frustratingly small shaft (likely eliminating most of the cracked housing complaints I have been reading), while at the same time mixing the ingredients much more thoroughly. I, unfortunately, will most likely not be useing this attachment again, simply because of the feeding mechanism. If a new housing is developed an marketed, I will happily look at it.

Black good,metal shavings continuedo problem

Submitted by Beansnees - 3/13/2017

I bought this to make baby food. After the first use it started making grey goo in the food around the shaft.I cleaned it again thoroughly..still there. I tried using very cold/ frozen meat...still there. Upon searching found that it is metal shavings! Kitchen aid says it's oil.. neither I really want feeding my child. Will be returning. Kind of a bummer since I love all my other attachments. Seems to be a long standing problem that has yet to be addressed ( found reviews for years with same problem) . I would not recommend buying this attachment.

unable to use for anything

Submitted by Expected more - 3/5/2017

I bought this a while ago and today realized I can not use it for ANYTHING. A while back, I tried to grind meat with it, only to have it fail completely (the blade only mushed the meat, didn't grind it and the machine quickly became backed up), and today I tried to grind sliced ham, only to realize after grinding two pounds of it, that the middle of the grinder was rubbing metal on metal, pushing a gray fine metal infused substance into the ground ham. Needless to say, I had to throw out the two pounds that I ground, had to buy new ham and had to use my old hand-cranked grinder. Disappointing.

Submitted by Cooking Guy - 2/16/2017

I bought the grinder years ago and make sausage sparingly. It always has ground the meat well, but now makes this horrible squeaking noise. When I make bread, the mixer doesn't make the noise so I have deduced it is the grinder. I have tried using olive oil as a lubricant but that doesn't work. I am looking at buying a free standing meat grinder at this point.

This grinder works worlds better than the sausage suffer and the only two complaints I have is that it leaves a black/gray looking stuff in the meat! Does not look appetizing and took me a long time to fish put all of it I could find! Besides that had some oil appear on the end of the inserted shaft because the mixer runs kinda hour with this attachment on.

Product failure - breakage

Submitted by Diane - 1/23/2017

The plastic piece used to hold the meat going into the grinder broke. I cut the meat into smaller pieces, about 1" - 1 1/4", inserted without having to push - more a guiding into the chute. I did not have to push or force. It seems the fat from the meat could not be ground and it formed into a icky mess. And, then the plastic split from the bottom, in the area of the auger up. I don't expect this poor quality of product from Kitchen Aid. I have and regularly use my products (Artisan mixer) and attachments although I do not often use the grinder. In our area many of us are grinding our own meats - this product needs to be improved.

Metal dust contaminating food - Beware

Submitted by Jason - 1/7/2017

We have had our unit for about 7 years and never had a need to use it until today. In about 1/4 pound of meat, it fully clogged the plate. Disassembling the grinder, the knife had been entangled in sinew. I had kept all fat but removed silver skin prior to grinding. Getting past the knife, the meat was all contaminated with metal rubbings and was dark grey. Further disassembly showed very light wear on the driveshaft. Not only was this unit unable to grind the meat, it was contaminating it as well. Nobody who wants a working product or cares for the health of themselves or those they feed should ever buy this unit. Many other similar reports are here in the reviews. My unit was a 7 year old system but was never used. Other people who just bought the unit experienced the same thing so they have done nothing to rectify it their manufacturing flaw.

Submitted by New user - 1/3/2017

I'm a bit concerned now that I have read some of these reviews. I'm looking into buying the grinder attachment. One of these reviews mentioned grey powder coming off in their food. I have noticed this with bowl that came with my mixer. I thought since it was new it would be fine after have been washed a few times, but I'm still seeing it in my food. This is a bit concerning that I could be ingesting metal particles.

Not as expected

Submitted by crude4u - 1/2/2017

I've only used my grinder to process cranberries, twice a year and have owned it for 5 years. Using 24 oz. of cranberries each time, the process takes less than 15 minutes. With this in mind, I have already noticed a crack on top of the hub where the unit attaches to the mixer. As yet it does not seem to affect the performance but considering the minimal amount of usage, I cannot imagine what I would be facing if I had used the unit more vigorously.

I am using the grinder for cheese. It works fine for a little while then black grimy particles come out with my cheese. I'm disappointed. I like my machine but this is frustrating. Not Dishwasher safe

Submitted by Dennis - 12/29/2016

Have one of these grinder attachments. KitchenAid chose to use some cheap pot metal aluminum alloy on the main body piece which inserts into the mixer power head. When run through the dishwasher, that piece is corroded by dishwasher detergent and has a gray powder all over it. No telling how much would get on other dishes? It rubs on on hands as a gray discoloration. The grinder plate and blade are not intended to go through the dishwasher. I could accept that limitation, but not being able to put the main body of the grinder through the dishwasher in not acceptable.

Cracked housing

Submitted by Tom - 12/12/2016

I have used my grinder for at least twelve years with excellent results, so can't complain. However, the last time I used it I noticed cracks developing in the plastic housing where it connects to the metal part that attached to the stand mixer. I went to the KitchenAid website intending to order a new housing (the other parts of my grinder still work fine), but was unable to do so. Can you help me out here? Otherwise a fine product that punches above its weight.

Terrible

Submitted by Sharon - 12/10/2016

I bought it last year, used once, cleaned well and put it away. Got it out this year and the housing is cracked and the plastic is pealing off. Can't use it since I don't want plastic in my food.
