Great Investment

Submitted by Organic70 - 7/20/2019

I cook organic for health reasons & feel great, but purchasing organic products can get quite expensive, especially ice cream.. I purchased the Kitchenaid ice cream maker at an inexpensive sale price, best ice cream I ever ate & adding fresh organic fruit to my homemade organic vanilla ice cream ... just knowing I am enjoying ice cream not only for less cost but keeping up with my healthy eating habits... great investment..

It leaks!

Submitted by Rick914 - 7/18/2019

I received this for Christmas, 2018, used twice and loved the ice-cream it made. Now we're in peach ice cream season again and I find the maker and it's carton soaked in blue liquid which I assume is the stuff that freezes. It's leaking where the maker sits on the mixer arms. Shouldn't this have lasted longer than 18 months?

Poor quality

Submitted by Jayhosh - 7/16/2019

We loved making ice cream at home with this until the attachment broke. I was able to finagle it to be usable for a little while longer but it is poorly engineered for long term use. The adapter is a plastic piece with a metal shaft going through it to turn the mixer. Unfortunately the plastic wasn't strong enough to hold the shaft in one spot and the tiny rod that is through the shaft doesn't provide much support.

Drive assembly broke on first use!!

Submitted by Disappointed in Jax - 7/15/2019

I have an electric ice cream maker but when my sweet husband gifted me with a KitchenAid Pro HD mixer for Christmas last year, I decided to consolidate my small appliances. Despite the bad reviews on the blue liquid, I took a leap of faith and bought the Kitchenaid Ice Cream Maker attachment in June. I attempted to make homemade peach ice cream for my Daughters birthday this past weekend. I had the mixture ready to go, attached the drive assembly, lifted the bowl and aligned the dasher to the drive assembly, turned it on to stir then poured in ice cream mixture. I even purchased a pouring shield so I could keep the mixer running as recommended while adding liquid. You can only imagine my shock and disappointment when the plastic drive assembly snapped!!! I found a replacement drive assembly for $40+. I originally paid $59 for the entire attachment so I don't want to fork out another $40-$50 with the possibility of it breaking again. I have always LOVED the Kitchenaid brand because hey have quality appliances. I just hate that I wasted so much money but didn't even get a bowl of ice cream.

Only used ONCE

Submitted by sdusty143 - 7/13/2019

As with every other 1 star review on this page, I too experienced blue goo. I have only used this ice cream maker once over the past 2 years (received it as a gift thinking I would enjoy it more) and today I was moving something in my cabinet and realized that blue goo has seeped everywhere in mhy cabinets essentially ruining the board. Blue rings, bubbled wood everywhere. Extremely disappointed as this is not something that should be happening with a product that cost, initially, 80 dollars. Such a shame.

Makes great ice cream

Submitted by coyharj2 - 7/12/2019

I received this as a gift from Christmas. Just started using as it as the weather has gotten warmer. Used it three times and on the fourth time my only complaint would be that the drive assembly is a poor design. I put everything together and then poured my ingredients into the bowl and went to go turn it on and the plastic piece that spins the drive motor snapped. My complaint is when I contacted KitchenAid explain to them what happened they said they couldn't do anything without a gift receipt or regular receipt. I explained to them it was a gift I had registered it when I received it and they said the only thing that they can do is sell me a new part. Other then that love how the ice cream and fruit sorbetturns out.

Broke 3rd Time

Submitted by KimJack - 7/9/2019

We purchased this item since we love home made ice cream, we followed the recipes provided with the attachment. We made 2 batches of delicious ice cream, we were making our third batch of ice cream and a plastic part broke off the attachment and into the ice cream. We couldn't finish making the ice cream and never found the little piece. Needless to say our ice cream ended up being very expensive! The ice cream was great, the process worked unfortunately the attachment didn't last long enough to give this product an accurate review since we only used it two times and paid full price for it.

Leaks blue goo, poor warranty

Submitted by Bluegoo - 7/9/2019

I've had the ice cream maker for a few years and used it once or twice a year. This year it was leaking blue liquid like many other reviews report. I contacted kitchenaide as directed in one of their webpages, but since it's outside of the one year warranty, I was offered a 20% discount to purchase a new one. No thanks, I'd rather buy a better quality ice cream maker from a company that stands behind their products for a known issue.

Blue liquid

Submitted by Frankie40 - 7/8/2019

I received this as a Christmas gift, loved the attachment and how easy it was to use. After about 6 times of using it I noticed a blue liquid in my freezer. There is a crack in the bowl which I've read that a lot of other people have had issues with as well. I can't use it anymore as it is leaking this blue liquid and won't freeze the ice cream properly. I had not used it a lot and it never dropped so I don't know how this crack would have happened except it being a manufacturer defect.

Submitted by ttownscott - 7/5/2019

I received the Ice Cream maker attachment as a gift from my mom a couple years ago. Finally last summer we got around to using it and made a great variety of small batch ice creams. Our favorite was to add Absinthe as a flavoring. However this year it began spurting blue fluid out when placed in the freezer. Reading other reviews, I feel lucky to have gotten one summer out of it but I hesitate replacing it seeing the recent negative reviews. Would like to know this problem has been resolved before ordering.

The bad reviews are true. Very poor quality. Pass.

Submitted by Brendan - 7/2/2019

I bought this thinking that the reviews about the ice cream maker cracking were from misuse, but regardless of the effort I made to keep this thing intact, it failed after three uses. The plastic housing for the bowl is brittle. Just placing it into the mixer and using it resulted in a stress fracture above the back fixture. Please see photos and don't make the mistake I did. Pass on this thing, the quality just isn't there and I am disappointed.

Love my KA Ice Cream Maker

Submitted by Chefette - 6/19/2019

I have had my KitchenAid mixer for 21 years and I have most of the attachments they make. I wanted the ice cream maker and finally bought it for myself. I have always stored it in my freezer and have never had an issue with it. I do have a large upright freezer an that is where I store it. After use, I wash it and set it on the counter to dry and then back into the freezer it goes. I love it so much that I bought a second one! My only complaint would be if you were making two batches of ice cream, they could not be churned one after the other. This is why I bought the second one.

Poor Design

Submitted by lauralizzy - 6/17/2019

I have only used the attachment a couple of times over the past few years. I have stored it on a shelf in my pantry and just put it in the freezer to use, only to have blue liquid leak all over my brand new freezer! After reading several reviews, I realize that this is not abnormal and that it is just poorly designed - no visible damage or cracks to the bowl to explain leaking. I contacted KitchenAid and because the warranty has already expired, they are only able to offer me a 20% discount. It is an expensive attachment to have to replace due to faulty design. It should be more like FREE replacement or a bigger discount - $64 is too much to have to pay to replace! I am a long time customer of KitchenAid and own several of their appliances, but don't waste your money on this attachment.

Major frustration; MOST EXPENSIVE ice cream ever

Submitted by Mourning ice cream - 6/6/2019

We've used this attachment maybe 5 times and stored it in its original packaging when or in the freezer. It started leaking blue fluid all over the freezer and now all over its box. I contacted KitchenAid about what was clearly a defective item or design, and they just told me I was outside the warranty window. Super expensive for lots of frustration. And I was really looking forward to some lactose free ice cream and frozen yogurt... I really wish I'd bought some other company's stand-alone ice cream freezer. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY.

USED attachment WAS SENT to me!!!

Submitted by Tatyana - 5/28/2019

On May 14th I ordered FIVE attachments from KA website. The Ice Cream Maker was the one that I could hardly wait. When I received my order on May 21st and pulled all the boxes on the counter top it caught my attention that the Ice Cream Maker was the only box that DIDN'T have the seal on it at the tab; all the other FOUR attachments were sealed at each tab. I was shocked when I opened the box: IT WAS USED by someone, but sold to me as a new item?? I immediately called KAid and explained what happened. The representative apologized, but didn't appear too shocked like I was. She sent me an eMail and asked to attach the pictures and there was another weird thing: the eMail was NOT from KAid, it was from Whirlpool!!!! Somehow I expected more from KAid.They have been around 100 years and I get an eMail from Whirlpool, who were in business 64 years. The whirlpool representative also said I would get an eMail confirmation when my replacement is shipped. Well, never got one. So, Today is May 28th, still waiting. I hope it is on its way to me. I was planning to order another 2 attachments, which now is a BIG "?" unless I get a good discount. I will update if I get my replacement.

Leaking blue fluid - was great before

Submitted by ElliotRVA - 5/23/2019

Like many other people in this review section our Icecream maker attachement is also leaking blue fluid all inside our freezer. We got this attachment in the middle of last year(2018) as a wedding present and loved it! Worked great and made some wonderful icecream, but about a year later and its failing. I guess our most recent batch of mint cookies and cream was too much for the little ice cream maker I would love for an updated model that is a bit higher quality so it can last as we absolutely want to get another icecream maker, but it needs to hold up to more than a couple of uses.

Blue liquid! :-(

Submitted by DianaT - 4/10/2019

Like many of the reviewers here, we were given the ice cream attachment when we were living in Europe (we moved back to Canada last year), for use with our Artisan Kitchenaid. It worked well for about 18 months and then leaked blue liquid all over the freezer, so we couldn't use it and we had to throw out the rest of the food in the freezer. As much as we enjoyed the homemade ice cream and sorbets, we could not recommend this product. I actually found these other reviews when I searched to see if I could buy another one online. Clearly the blue liquid experience is not unique, so I won't be reinvesting.

Great Ice Cream But Leaks

Submitted by JL13 - 4/1/2019

My wife bought this ice cream attachment a couple years ago and it immediately started leaking blue liquid when allowed to warm above freezing. The blue liquid leak work-around was to store the bowl in the freezer so the liquid would remain solid. Unfortunately the time has come to free up some space in the freezer and now the bowl is creating a big mess and will probably be thrown away. The attachment really does make good ice cream but it is not worth the mess of a leaky storage. I typically dont write reviews, but after contacting kitchenaid they offered 20% off which expires in 7 days. That doesn't even bring the price in the ballpark of amazon. I stumbled on all these other reviews citing the blue liquid and thought I'd share our experience. If kitchenaid would stand behind their product I'd reccomend the ice cream bowl. Since the best they can do is offer an above-wholesale replacement I would strongly reccomend buying a stand-alone ice cream maker for less money.

No longevity

Submitted by Lady McMengyan - 3/27/2019

Made several batches of ice cream over the past year. Was very careful to let the bowl warm to room temperature before washing and always used caution while cleaning to avoid scratching the surface. Still developed a hairline crack along the bottom like so many other users here. Now half of the liquid inside is gone and the bowl is pretty much useless. I wish I would have known that this was not a long lasting product before I bought it.

Leaked Blue Fluid all over food in pantry.

Submitted by FlyNSam - 3/26/2019

We have used the ice cream maker less than 12 times, (probably more like 4-5) and have recently noticed blue stains on food and other appliance items in our pantry. After closer inspection we found it is coming from the ice cream maker. Sure did not expect this from KitchenAid. Sad to see a quality problem from KitchenAid.

Happy until Blue Liquid Leaking

Submitted by akeNY - 3/19/2019

I received this as a gift and made numerous batches of ice cream, gelato, and sorbet. Kept it in the freezer, like the manual says to do, so it would be ready whenever I wanted to make something. 6 months ago, while it was sitting on a shelf and not in the freezer, I noticed a blue liquid at it's base and dried drips on it's side. I have since moved it to where I can monitor it and it's leaking on a regular basis without me touching it. Very disappointing especially after seeing all the reviews online and how long this has been a problem for this attachment (at least 10 years). Consensus on line is that it stems from storing it in the freezer - ironic, since that is what is recommended to do in the manual. I'll be looking for a replacement, unfortunately not a Kitchenaid.

Doesn't fit my mixer!

Submitted by LindaFitz - 3/10/2019

I have a K5SS stand mixer which has served me well for a long, long time. I received the ice cream attachment for Christmas and used it today for the first time. To my utter dismay I could not get the drive assembly to fit properly. Since I had all the ingredients ready to go, I was bound and determined to make ice cream today. I was able to get the drive shaft in a position so it was able to work the dasher. The ice cream is now in the freezer and I am optimistic it will taste good. However, the poor fit of this attachment is totally unacceptable. Of course this always happens on a weekend. I will be formally contacting kitchenaid this week to see what can be done to rectify this situation. In the meantime, I can not recommend this product.

5 uses and broke!

Submitted by Shan77 - 3/6/2019

I have used this 5 times, followed all instructions to the letter and blue liquid began seeping from it. Assuming it is toxic, thus rendering the whole attachment unusable. The worst part is we really enjoyed the ice cream we made.

Don't waste your money

Submitted by pisca17 - 3/5/2019

This worked great the first time, was pretty easy to set up. However I've used it a second time and the top piece of the assembly cracked and now it's useless. I followed all the instructions to a T. I find it ridiculous that the top piece is made of plastic.

Second Leaking model

Submitted by steph2707 - 3/4/2019

While I loved this when it worked, it began leaking inexplicably from the side piece after a few uses. After kitchenaid replaced it once, it happened again and now their only solution is that I buy a new one. I will not be doing so as they clearly have not addressed the design flaw throughout the years. Apparently the pieces exist for the lift-type mixer, however that is not the style i have. If you had a lift type mixer i'd be even more wary to buy this as there would be additional stressors on those side pieces. Buyer beware.

Leaking blue liquid

Submitted by Krashnicki - 3/2/2019

While we have had this a couple years, we have only used it 4 or 5 times. It's is now leaking the blue liquid and will need to be thrown away. There are no visible cracks or holes

A great way to start making ice cream

Submitted by StevennevetS - 2/15/2019

Solid ice cream maker. Be sure to follow all direction in making it as it deals with extreme changes in temperature. Failure to do so will damage the device and the ice cream!

Leaking fluid after two uses

Submitted by kellijo52 - 2/11/2019

I used this ice-cream maker twice. Blue fluid starting leaking out after being put into the freezer. Only support I got when I contacted them was an offer to get 20% a new one, that would have the same problems.

Blue liquid everywhere after one use

Submitted by Kelly I - 2/11/2019

Leaks blue liquid everywhere after we used to make a single batch of ice cream. We have loved our mixer and food processor but this is incredibly disappointing. We will likely look to other brands for our products in the future

Very Disappointed

Submitted by Wescoast15 - 2/6/2019

I just purchased the ice cream attachment for Christmas and only used it 3 times. It worked great the first two times but on the 3rd try the drive assembly broke trying to spin. Not sure why you would make something like that plastic. I love kitchen aid and for the price this really sucks..Totally disappointed with this product.

Works well, with a few avoidable problems

Submitted by heartflower - 1/18/2019

I've used the ice cream maker a few times and gotten good results after I learned that the container can be either too cold (making extra hard ice cream that doesn't freeze right) or too warm (making too soft ice cream.) I found that leaving it in the chest freezer was too cold and the cream freezes to the sides before churning, which can make it lumpy or cause the dasher to detach. My fridge's freezer doesn't get it quite cold enough to be usable in a cone. By turning my fridge's freezer down a bit, I was able to make great ice cream.
